Volunteer Policy
1.0 POLICY
As a not for profit endeavor with limited financial resources, the Society will seek and encourage the active involvement of a corps of community volunteers. This policy is intended to attract the additional human resources needed to both maintain and expand the services offered at the Rehabilitation Centre, and to provide the educational and communications services which build public support for the Society’s Mission.
2.0 QUALIFICATIONS
The Mission of the Society offers opportunity for the useful application of a broad range of skills and personal backgrounds. The primary qualifications will be an interest in the Society’s Mission and Vision and a commitment to the time and effort needed to make a meaningful contribution. Because of the broad public interaction in educational and promotional activities, all volunteers will be subject to a criminal record check.
3.0 RECRUITMENT
The Society will make known through media contacts, the various public activities it sponsors, and direct personal contacts made by the Directors and Executive Manager, that it needs and welcomes volunteer assistance, providing information as to the areas where this type of participation is possible.
4.0 DIRECTION AND DOCUMENTATION
4.1 Leadership in the implementation of the Policy will be provided by a Volunteer Coordinator responsible directly to the Board of Directors.
4.2 The related program components will be organized and managed through the following Board approved documentation:
a) A Volunteer Application Form which requests and records information in respect to the skills and experience candidates have to offer and other pertinent information.
b) A Volunteer Interview Record which highlights specific areas of concern, records the responses, lists references, and provides an overall summary of the candidate’s capabilities and aptitudes
c) A Volunteer Waiver which records the acceptance by successful candidates of their understanding of the Society’s liability and the need for confidentiality.
d) A Volunteer Indoctrination Report which confirms that the volunteers have been provided with a job description, given any required training, and are then ready to assume the assigned duties.
5.0 VOLUNTEERS’ RIGHTS
5.1 A volunteer has the right to ask for assistance in any situation where he/she is uncertain as to a procedure or policy.
5.2 Volunteers may refuse to proceed with any activity they feel may be unsafe or for which they feel there is insufficient supervision.
5.3 Volunteers may request re-assignment if they feel that there are other areas or activities in which they might make a more worthwhile contribution.
